RESULTS
Installed in over 7,000 bakery and cafe locations across Germany
Enabled fast expansion and simplified operations through centralized POS management
Kept payments and store operations running under unstable connectivity
CONTEXT
Next-generation white-label POS for German bakeries and cafes
We helped architect, build, test, roll out, and support iPOS from sketch to production for 7,000+ locations across Germany.
The platform serves both a single small cafe and large bakery or restaurant chains with thousands of registers.
Challenge
The system had to stay reliable while growing across thousands of stores
The core challenge was not only customization. The system had to keep payments, cash operations, and daily sales running under unstable internet conditions and during rapid chain expansion.
The primary challenges included:
- Support for both single-location shops and large chain rollouts
- Uninterrupted payment processing and secure cash management
- Offline operation during unstable internet connectivity
- Real-time chain communication, pricing, cash monitoring, and reporting
- Fast expansion without technical setup hassle for owners and administrators
- Secure data handling and role-based access control
- Coexistence of multiple software versions and pricing tiers across customers
HOW WE HELPED SOLVE THE PROBLEM
iPOS was designed and developed from the ground up
iPOS is a scalable and secure point-of-sale platform built for businesses from small cafes to national bakery chains.
We designed it for reliable growth, gradual rollout, and long-term support across hundreds of chains and thousands of cash registers.
Modern, highly customizable interface for various device types and display resolutions, using an advanced UI Designer tool
White-label options, allowing vendors and chains to use custom branding and custom functionality sets
Multi-master POS architecture, eliminating the need for dedicated local servers while still supporting offline functionality
Dual management modes, allowing both local in-branch control and centralized cloud management
Centralized fleet, pricing, discount, loyalty, happy hour, and reporting management, including cash monitoring and income predictions
Role-based access system supporting a range of administrator roles and operational responsibilities
Multi-layered security model, including:
- Rolling encryption keys
- Encryption in transit and at rest
- Physical separation of sensitive data
- Role-based access
Flexible deployment models: shared cloud, dedicated cloud, or customer-managed cloud for different security and cost requirements
Version compatibility layer, using separate containers to support different application and API versions for staged rollouts
E-commerce extension, syncing inventory and enabling online orders and local pickup
AI-based theft detection as an additional protection mechanism for cash and retail operations
Comprehensive automated test coverage, ensuring high reliability and maintainability over time
EDC RELIABILITY
Mission-critical operations made reliable through EDC technology
Following a thorough analysis conducted together with the client, POS vendors, and end users, the primary mission-critical operations were identified: uninterrupted payment processing, secure cash management, and offline operational capability.
To address these challenges, we built iPOS with a local-first architecture and resilient synchronization features.
We developed several reliable components, including:
Local transaction journaling with encrypted real-time storage on each POS terminal
Offline mode with buffer caching for data waiting to be synchronized to the cloud
Peer-to-peer synchronization between terminals over local network without internet dependency
Multi-master synchronization across both local network and cloud-connected locations
Autonomous operation of each POS during both internet and local network outages
These mechanisms ensured continuous sales processing, accurate cash tracking, and zero transaction loss, even during severe connectivity disruptions.
